Job Summary
Advising is a process that is related to student retention and success. Specifically, advising helps students build solid educational plans to achieve their career goals, and assists them in executing those plans. Advising helps and empowers students to approach their education in an organized and meaningful way. Creating a learner-centered environment to inform students of the nature of training and educational opportunities available for them is central for this position.

Specific Duties
Assist students set educational goals and encourage students to develop self-planning through the use of available college resources;
• Support students in goal-setting, career choices, alternative training as well as general financial aid information;
• Assist in evaluating advance course credit and assessing certificate and diploma completion requirements when necessary;
• Provide new and prospective students with test interpretations for programs that require placement assessments and/or assessments of English and Math skills
• Responsible for exam invigilation for outside colleges/universities/agencies;
• Provide relevant information on training and program or course requirements and suggests appropriate counseling, testing, career exploration and other community resources;
• Responsible for promoting, developing and maintaining the Learning Commons (formerly called the Resource Centre) including educational, occupational and career information; communicate with school districts, colleges, universities, and other agencies for information;
• Assist students in registering for courses and programs; understanding program requirements and admission criteria and process as well as information on course prerequisites, etc;
• Be sensitive to the appropriate time and need to refer students who are experiencing personal and academic conflicts or barriers to the Wellness Coach or counsellor;
• Maintain the appropriate student enrollment data as well as program specific statistic and reporting requirements;
• Represent the College during career days and education seminars within the region;
• Responsible for assisting others with resource searches and inquiries and other library searches, especially online;
• You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
• You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
• Other related duties as assigned by the Regional Principal or designate.

Skills & Qualifications
• Recognized two (2 ) year diploma in Social Sciences
• 4 years or more experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 
• Strong interpersonal skills and high degree of sensitivity to both verbal and non-verbal cues.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to interact well with others.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of all clients using the department’s services.
• Ability to solicit and use feedback, follow directions and procedures.
• Ability to work independently.
• Proficient with a variety of computer systems, including Microsoft Suite systems.
• Experience with statistical and information reporting
• Previous experience with adults who have multiple barriers to education and employment.
• Experience and an understanding of effective ways of working with a wide range of youth and adults
• Ability to work collaboratively with others of diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
• Demonstrated service approach and client/student centered philosophy
• Flexibility to handle a variety of projects and duties in a multi-tasking environment.
• Ability to conduct and analyze related research including online data.
• Driver’s license.
