Job Summary
Reporting to the Dean of Human Services, University Transfer, and Business Studies, the Senior Laboratory Technician will manage, maintain, and oversee all aspects of laboratory and field work support pertinent to their assigned discipline(s), and will further support department activity and development at all campus locations. This includes logistics, inventory, and waste and safety management, in addition to performing the duties of the Laboratory Technician when required. The Senior Laboratory Technician will also liaise with and provide safety training to other departments as needed at all campuses.
Specific Duties
• All duties pertain to laboratories belonging to the assigned discipline(s):
• Ensure labs and lab users comply with safety regulations.
• Oversee waste management within the department.
• Direct, train, and supervise Laboratory Technician(s) and/or student assistant(s) at all campuses, as necessary.
• Maintain the safety equipment found in laboratory spaces.
• Order, purchase, receive and store equipment, chemicals, and/or other materials.
• Create, revise, and maintain policy and procedure manuals for ancillary areas of responsibility: inventory, ordering, equipment use and maintenance, waste management, etc.
• Orient new staff at all campuses on the relevant procedures and policies; train staff in the safe maintenance and use of all laboratory equipment.
• Create, revise and maintain instructions for laboratory preparation.
• Perform regular maintenance and minor repairs of instrumentation; coordinate major repairs of equipment.
• Reconcile expenditure transactions for assigned department against College database budget reports.
• Manage and maintain an electronic database and physical inventory of chemicals, supplies and equipment in the laboratories; assist with equipment sign out/in and act as a contact to provide information and assistance, as required.
• Research and revise current and novel lab procedures and equipment to aid in department development.
• Provide support as needed in accreditation processes and liaise with other College departments at all campuses.
• Create and maintain safety plans, and incident records in the laboratory or field, and provide training to department staff, as needed.
• Obtain additional required safety training certificates to comply with the College’s safety plan or additional discipline related training, as required.
• Perform duties of Laboratory Technician as and when required.

• Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Skills & Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) specializing in the applicable discipline, OR equivalent education and experience in the discipline and/or related disciplines
• 5 years or more Previous experience providing support in a student laboratory setting

• Proven ability to supervise others and demonstrated experience in leading others
• Work independently/unsupervised in resolving problems and decision making
• Ability to organize time and workload
• Ability to work against multiple time constraints and deadlines
• Where applicable, experience working in a Chemical Safety Level 3 and/or Biosafety Level 2 facility will be an asset
• Knowledgeable in WHMIS/GHS and safe handling, management, storage and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste
WHMIS certification and/or first aid certification is considered an asset
• Knowledgeable in the operation and repair of instrumentation used in a laboratory environment
• Intermediate excel skills required for the development and maintenance of inventory listings
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to multi-task
• Demonstrated ability to be a creative problem solver
• Ability to work effectively and safely in a potentially hazardous work environment
• Physical ability to complete the demands of the job
